New York Driver’s License Renewal: Your 2025 Guide

Renewing your New York driver’s license is a straightforward process, but staying informed about the latest requirements can save you time and hassle. Whether you’re upgrading to a REAL ID or simply renewing your standard license, here’s what you need to know.

You can renew your New York driver’s license online if:

  • Your license is not suspended or revoked.

  • It has not expired for more than two years.

  • You have a valid vision test on file with the DMV.

If your license has been expired for more than two years, you must apply for a new one, which includes passing a vision test, written test, pre-licensing course, and road test.

Before renewing, ensure you have:

  • Your current driver’s license.

For a REAL ID, you’ll need:

  • Proof of identity (e.g., U.S. passport).

  • Social Security number.

  • Two proofs of New York residency (e.g., utility bill, bank statement).

For an Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL), the same documents are required, plus additional forms.
